Connswater Homes completed a £5M conversion of Grade B listed former Mersey Street Primary School back in September 2011. The original school was designed in 1927 by R.S. Wilshire to accommodate a total of 1100 pupils but following years of diminishing enrolment, closure proved necessary and the building ceased operating as a school on the 31 August 2006.

Responding to a strong community appeal the NIHE nominated Connswater Homes to develop proposals for upgrade and retention of this key historic building for the benefit of the community and future generations. The key aim was to develop a sensitive design solution to convert the existing redundant school into social housing with minimal disruption to the historic character and fabric. This was achieved by retention of all main elevations and introduction of a mezzanine level within a number of the original classrooms in order to create 2-storey living accommodation. Conversion of the school into 30 apartments through carefully considered and sustainable design has provided tenants with elegantly designed homes for modern living situated in a building with a wealth of character in the heart of the East Belfast community
